2008 Philipp Kuhn Steinbuckel Grosses Gewachs Pfalz
The Grosses Gewachs or Erste Lage Riesling saga continues with another gifted producer. Philip Kuhn has a quite large portfolio of wines ranging from classic Rieslings and Pinot Noir’s, to some unusual blends of Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Merlot. Today it is all about Grosses Gewachs Riesling.
2008 Philipp Kuhn Steinbuckel GG Pfalz
Medium yellow gold color. The nose is developed but a bit restrained, showing good Riesling character, with quince, melon, green apple and lemon, spiced up by warm rubber and basil. Full bodied, but sleek texture, it does appear to be less expressive on the palate and less complex than the 2007 A.Christmann I had recently, but still showing good balance, mouth-watering acidity, a bright and a more mineral character and plenty of fresh flavors. Medium finish with a bit of bitterness. Did not enjoy it as much as the Idig Riesling A.Christmann GG. Overall still a rewarding wine with good crispiness. (89/100)
